Wedding trends for 2012

Show some leg
Taking a cue from the red carpet, designer Reem Acra offered a fall 2012 gown with a high, thigh-baring slit.

Layer it on
Multiple layers and texture are big themes for fall 2012 bridal gowns. Here, a design from Reem Acra featuring layered skirts.

Stylishly short
For the bride who likes it short and sweet, a perky design from Monique Lhuillier's fall 2012 collection.

Long sleeves and lace
This blush, long-sleeved lace gown by Elizabeth Fillmore was no doubt inspired by Kate Middleton, 2011's bride of the year.

Capelet cover-up
Stylish capes and boleros keep the chill away from the shoulders of strapless-gown-wearing brides.

Illusion neckline
In lieu of strapless gowns, designers such as Monique Lhuillier are offering sheer, embellished fabric to layer like a veil over the neckline. So-called illusion necklines were popular at the Fall 2012 Bridal Fashion Week in New York.

Sequin-embellished waist ribbon
Embellished belts offer today's brides a way to add interest to an otherwise simple gown.

Feathery hair accent
Feathers continue to be on-trend accents for shoes, bouquets and hair.

Today's bride wants to make it personal. Boulder, Colo., jeweler Todd Reed, who shows at I. Gorman Jewelers in Washington, D.C., designs engagement and wedding rings using unusual diamond cuts, shapes and colors.

Garden-fresh bouquet
Sarah von Pollaro of Urban Petal Designs in Washington, D.C., used hosta and other greens and flowers from the garden to create this just-plucked, natural-looking bouquet favored by brides today.

Jeweled bouquets
Bouquets don't have to be made of flowers. This bride used her grandmother's jewelry to construct hers.

Pet centerpieces and favors
More and more people are looking for ways to incorporate their pets into the wedding, according to wedding planner Preston Bailey. He encourages using flower sculptures of pets for centerpieces and favors.

Custom favors
High-profile event planner Bryan Rafanelli, who produced Chelsea Clinton's wedding, says party favors and gifts are becoming more and more customized to the individual couples to reflect their interests and tastes. Here, Rafanelli has created a custom balsa wood airplane kit as a favor for a couple who were big aviation fans.

Invitations with graphics
For a fresh take on invitations, Albertine Press in Somervillle, Mass., designed this graphic plaid as a way to send a festive fashion statement.
